This morning I had a man try to convince me to go to “real med school”. This left me realizing that most people probably assume that naturopathic medical school is an easy version of med school. I can’t necessarily argue…because I have never attended a traditional med school however, our professors say that our program was assessed by an M.D. who responded in awe when she looked at our curriculum: “Your students are taking the typical medical school curriculum PLUS learning all the naturopathic modalities in 4 years.” There is however, one girl who attended both naturopathic and conventional medical school. She wrote about her experiences here: http://naturopathicstandards.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Naturopathic-medical-education-comparison.pdf
I’d love to spend a week in a traditional med school to see the similarities and differences. As for us, this is a typical week in the life of a 2nd term Naturopathic student:
9 hours of Biomedical Science
6 hours of Anatomy & Physiology
3 hours of Botanical Medicine or Nutrition
3 hours of Microbiology or Critical Analysis
3 hours of Traditional Chinese Medicine or Homeopathy
3 hours of Naturopathic Counseling
3 hours of Naturopathic History
In a 3.5 years we will be Naturopathic Doctors (ND) AKA primary care physicians with tools like acupuncture, botanicals, physmed manipulations (similar to chiropractic manipulations), nutrition, homeopathic remedies, counseling, and so much more.
Typical patients for an ND range anywhere from a child with a fractured wrist to a 79 year-old man with lung cancer.
Naturopathic Doctors try to use the least invasive medicine possible before moving forward to more consequential medicines. They have a knowledge of all pharmaceuticals in order to help patients either subside their medications and move towards more natural and holistic healing or to help patients better balance their much needed medications. We respect and hope to work along side MDs 🙂
