Last night was different than anything I’ve gotten to experience so far. We weren’t doing any good for the community by participating, rather, we were meeting other Americans. Ok, let me back up real quick…
A couple of weeks ago, all the important ambassadors of Togo visited our ship. During their stay, the US Ambassador talked to my friend Kiesha & informed her of an all American St. Patrick’s Day party being held at the US Embassy the Saturday after St. Patrick’s Day.
She spread the word & found out some more information, and a group of about 15 of us ended up going. Here are some of the girls posing for a picture before we left:
In Benin, getting a taxi was rarely ever a problem. But in Togo, we sometimes have troubles finding one that is not already occupied. Last night was one of those nights…but after a while we finally got a ride:
To get to the house itself, we took a small taxi ride (provided by one of the guys we met at the party), and walked down a muddy road with no lights. He obviously knew where he was going or else we would have never found this house in the dark. The house ended up being a typical African house with several rooms. The floors were tile and the walls were bare, but he made us feel right at home with the help of a mattress on the floor, a few pillows, and a fan to keep us cool during the night. Here’s a picture of the four of us (not sure why his shirt is off…):
