Every job has it’s perk. As Dining Room staff, I was able to get food whenever I was hungry and as Sales staff, I got free coffee every day. But as far as jobs go, even though OR Sterilizing has me working with blood all day, it definitely gives me the highest job perk of being able to watch live surgeries! And they aren’t your typical surgeries by any means, these are true African surgeries: Giant tumors, cleft palates, unimaginable bow legs, hundreds of blinding cataracts, and horrible burns. It’s such a privilege to be able to see the patient before and after the surgery…can I just say that our surgeons are amazing?
Two days ago, there was a patient with a tumor the size or a softball taking over his mouth and nose. His upper teeth seemed to be attached to the tumor & were sticking out so far that I found it unreal that he was able to eat anything. While I was watching the surgery, one of the nurses told me that he had only had the tumor for four years, but over the last couple of months it had gotten so big that he lost a lot of weight. Mercy Ships seemed to come just in time.
