It started off with a bunch of us young adults getting all dressed up and going out to town to find a New Year’s party…which you would think there would be a lot of them. But surprisingly, everything was closed! We soon found out that the parties don’t exactly start until about 11:30. So we all sat, talked, walked around, and took pictures until then.
Once the time came, we found a live band in the middle of town with lights and New Year goody bags. I got my goody bag, but a guy asked me where to get them so I walked him to the place where they were giving them out. But…I wasn’t exactly paying attention to the time, so while we were talking to the lady who gave out the bags, the countdown started to the year 2010! And within those 12 seconds…I got beer spilt all over my dress & two guys attempted to kiss me. What a start to the new year ; )
Immediately after, I returned to my group of friends & watched the most amazing fireworks I’ve ever seen. They were even making shapes with the fireworks! All the while, we were blowing our noise makers and wearing our masks & party hats.
The rest of the night was spent dancing to the band. And our group of about 12 grew to a Mercy Ship group of about 30. At one point, all of us joined in one dance move and the men on stage joined with us too! Then when the song was over, they started talking to us in Spanish, in front of the rest of the crowd which filled up all the streets…but none of us spoke Spanish, so all we could say was, “No hablamos Espanol.”
A guy from the ship and I swing danced, Ram and I broke it down, Kaylee and I threw fake dice at one another & did the “Benin Dance”, and my African soccer buddies and I simply laughed at one another and danced the night away.
We got back to the ship around 3:00 am to find another new roommate…and our beds calling our names.
