Monday: I walked into the Mercy Ship Starbucks not knowing the difference between a cappuccino and a latte (pathetic, I know). But by the end of the day I was making lattes, cappuccinos, frappuccinos & mochas left and right…with Kaylee’s help of course. Kaylee used to work at a Starbucks back home, so she taught me the “right way”.
Side Note-All of the coffee on board is donated by Starbucks. We are the first Starbucks in Africa : )
Tuesday: Kaylee and I brought supplies from a storage room on deck 2 to the ship shop on deck 5 for the majority of the morning. Then we opened all the boxes, put items in their correct places, and flattened all the boxes. After lunch, Kendall taught me how to work the snack bar.
Wednesday: I started off in the snack bar with Kendall’s assistance, then after closing down the morning shift, Kendall and I went to get supplies from the container on deck 3. We have to use a small trolly and maneuver it through tiny hallways, hot rooms, & bumpy grounds in order to get to and from the GIANT container that holds all our materials. It’s a good workout. Then, that night, I got to run the coffee shop all by myself!
Thursday: I spent the whole morning getting supplies from deck 2 with my boss Cathy and coworker Marilyn. Again, a great workout. We completely stocked the ship shop and dealt with a few other small tasks too. And today’s after lunch shift included taking boxes down to the dumpster, learning how to work the ship shop, getting more supplies from the container, then working the snack bar. Busy day…but it makes it go by so fast.
