There are two giant machines in the sterilizing room that take out all the air and replace it with steam in order to deep clean everything in the most effective way possible. Today, as we were closing up for the evening, one of the machines began leaking water. And not just a little water…there was a nice trickling stream coming out form the giant machine. Bas and his wife immediately put rags & cloths on the floor, and then Bas grabbed a mop and the mop bucket. The rags helped a little bit, but Bas’s mopping skills saved the day. He would mop up a puddle, then place his mop in the bucket and his wife would squeeze it out. Pretty soon he had a good sweat going (partly because it was hard work & partly because it’s one of the hottest rooms on the ship), so I ran to get another mop to help. With two mops and lots of rags, what could have been a disastrous situation ended up just being an exciting end to the day. Shortly after the stream of water stopped flowing, I had to walk to Ward B to give them their freshly sanitized materials & on my way there, I walked past the laundry room which was completely flooded! The people working in the hospital laundry room were literally scooping buckets of water off of the floor! Apparently the ship got off balance because of something dealing with our recently filled fuel tank? Anyways, the engineers came to the rescue within a matter of minutes and everything will be back to normal tomorrow…at least I hope!
